“Stan” is the sculpture I am planning to build at the 2015 Alloy PGH artist residency. It will be a balance constructed from steel measuring 7ft high by 20 feet long. At one end of the balance will be 1 ton of coking coal, and at the other end 1 cup of black coffee in a United Steel Workers Union ceramic cup. “Stan” was inspired by my favorite story shared by my family about my grandfather. From 1965 – 1995 my grandfather drove to Clairton Works with a ceramic coffee cup in hand. His coffee cup without a lid and United Steel Workers Union Local District 1557 printed on the side never spilled a drop.
